Persistent high hatchery recruitment despite advanced reoligotrophication and significant natural spawning in a whitefish

چکیده
Many lakes of the pre-Alpine region suffered from severe eutrophication that affected natural reproduction whitefish (Coregonus spp.) and necessitated large-scale supportive breeding programs. With advanced reoligotrophication, it is now important to evaluate relevance continued artificial for population dynamics. We focused on a lake has reached phase III i.e., biomass production declining since 2012 in response low phosphorus concentrations. show most eggs are naturally spawned, observed oxygen concentrations would again support embryo development at all depths, ready-to-hatch embryos can indeed be found spawning grounds. marked hatchery-produced 2014 cohort with Alizarin red, stocked them as usual (at larval or early juvenile stages), recaptured over period five years. Fish were aged yearly growth rings scales, otoliths checked marks. 90.3 % hatchery-born. This ratio did not decline fish age. also determined cohorts 2012–2020 (based first annual ring scales) stocking intensity predicted (r2 = 0.67). strong density dependence individual suggests largely size nine years reoligotrophication III. conclude large areas grounds allow successful embryogenesis, quantities but recruitment significantly reduced by ecological evolutionary factors, e.g., competition hatchery-born fish, desynchronization trophic interactions, long-term effects fishing- hatchery-induced evolution.

Massive stocking with hatchery larvae may constrain natural recruitment of whitefish stocks and induce unwanted evolutionary changes
The stocking of hatchery-produced whitefish is a common practice in most countries of the species' natural range. Rigorous monitoring of the effects of stocking is less common , however, and possible negative impacts of stocking ontlle target population are rarely considered, even though supportive stocking might exelt a series of negative effects. The present study discusses Ulese potentiiLl i...
متن کاملBroodstock History Strongly Influences Natural Spawning Success in Hatchery Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
We used genetic parentage analysis of 6200 potential parents and 5497 juvenile offspring to evaluate the relative reproductive success of hatchery and natural steelhead (Onchorhynchus mykiss) when spawning in the wild between 2008 and 2011 in the Wenatchee River, Washington. Hatchery fish originating from two prior generation hatchery parents had <20% of the reproductive success of natural orig...
متن کاملChanges in whitefish scales d13C during eutrophication and reoligotrophication of subalpine lakes
We measured the isotope composition of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) scales from 50-yr collections to determine the pattern of change of d13C during the eutrophication and reoligotrophication of two subalpine lakes: Lakes Constance and Geneva. The isotope composition of scales from Lake Annecy, a subalpine lake that has been protected from eutrophication, was also determined, to provide a con...

Temporal spawning divergence in European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus)
A critical step in ecological speciation is the development of reproductive isolation. The processes leading up to reproductive isolation are difficult to study since they often occur over very long time periods. Populations of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) has gone through reticulate divergent evolution in many Scandinavian lakes during the last 10 000 years. Some populations even e...
